“Mom?” the boy prompted warily at the breakfast table.

“Mm?”

“What does it mean when I know I’m dreaming?”

He addressed his mother’s back, for she was busily scrubbing dishes in the kitchen sink, her posture stiff and her movements vigorous. “What are you on about?” she asked after a moment.

The boy stared down into his soggy cereal. “I’ve been having these dreams,” he confessed, his heart betraying a nervous flutter. “They feel so real. And when I’m dreaming, I know I’m dreaming. I can go anywhere I want—do anything I want.” He swallowed. “Do you know what it means?”

His mother’s hands froze on the dish she held. The sound of the running faucet filled the silence.

“How long have you been having these dreams?” she asked him quietly.

“About a month or so.”

She glanced over her shoulder at him. His guts squirmed beneath her scrutiny.

“It doesn’t mean anything,” she finally declared, resuming her chore. “You just have an overactive imagination.”

“Then… do you ever have dreams like that?” he dared to ask. “Where you know you’re dreaming?”

“No, and I don’t particularly care to,” she said. “Now finish your breakfast.”
